Ethylene Dibromide

Ethylene dibromide is a synthetic chemical once used in pesticides and leaded gasoline. It can contaminate groundwater and is linked to cancer and reproductive harm.

Ethylene dibromide (EDB) is a synthetic chemical formerly used as a soil fumigant and gasoline additive. Banned for most uses in the 1980s, it can still contaminate groundwater through leaching from polluted soil. EDB is measured in parts per billion (ppb), with the EPA setting a maximum contaminant level of 0.05 ppb in drinking water. While no longer in widespread use, its persistence in the environment makes it an ongoing concern for water quality management.
